RUMFORD – Senior Andy Shorey was grateful for having eclipsed over 1,000 points in his career.

Shorey and the rest of the Mountain Valley boys basketball team rejoiced when the feat was accomplished with 4:13 remaining in the second quarter Tuesday. The Falcons had forced a turnover and set-up their offense and D.J. Gerrish threw a bullet pass inside to Shorey who used the backboard to score a basket.

The Falcons eventually cruised to a 76-12 victory over Madison as Class B Mountain Valley improved to 8-1. Four Falcons reached double figures.

“It’s been a long road,” Shorey said. “A lot of time and a lot of hard work was put into this day. It is very rewarding, and it feels good. I’m just glad the team won.”

Shorey entered the game 12 points shy of reaching the milestone, and the crowd at Puiia Gymnasium was well aware of that. A scoring chart was on the wall behind the student body section, and each point was recorded. Shorey scored five points in the first quarter and then made four baskets in the first 3:46 of the second period.

Shorey joins Matt Gaudet, Andy Bedard and Jamie Belskis in the 1,000-point club. His father Andy Sr. scored his 1,000th point in February, 1977 on the same floor. The elder Shorey finished with 1,200 career points while playing for Rumford from 1975-77. The Panthers won Class A state championships in ’76 and ’77, including a New England crown in 1976. Mountain Valley coach Dave Gerrish was a teammate.

“I knew it was coming,” Andy Shorey Sr. said. “Reaching 1,000 points is a big thing, and I had a tear in my eye. It brought back a lot of memories, and I am very proud of Andy.”

Andy’s mother, Diane Carr Shorey, is a member of the Hall Of Fame in basketball and softball at the University of Southern Maine.

“It is really pleasing to see,” Diane Shorey said. “It’s a big accomplishment, and it’s important when any of these kids reach a milestone or win.”

Shorey had 17 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals. Gerrish scored 14 points, 11 assists and six steals

Mountain Valley led 18-4 after one quarter and proceeded to break it open by scoring 18 of the first 20 points in the second quarter. Owen Jones (14 points) led the assault, and Matt Lyons added 10 points. The Falcons made 11 0f 13 shots (84 percent) from the floor in the second quarter and committed nine turnovers in the game.

“We might have been a little tight at the beginning,” Gerrish said. “We were working on a new zone press. The team knew Andy was close to 1,000, so we wanted to get the ball inside to him.”
