ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) – A firefighter charged with stabbing his ex-girlfriend at a ski resort told her “I’m going to end your skiing career” before plunging a knife into her thigh, police said.
Ethan Hayes, 24, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Vermont District Court to two felony charges of aggravated domestic assault and three misdemeanor counts of violating an abuse prevention order.
An affidavit by State Police Trooper David Petersen said Gabrielle Gould, 19, of Lyndon, was outside a lodge at Burke Mountain ski area Sunday when she spotted Hayes, against whom she had obtained a restraining order.
As she tried to leave, Hayes found her and grabbed her from behind, saying “How could you leave without talking to me?”
and “I’m going to end your skiing career,” according to the affidavit.
He also asked her if she wanted to die, the affidavit said.
After the attack, a number of bystanders surrounded Hayes, took a knife from him and held him until police arrived, the affidavit said.
Gould was treated at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital and released.
Hayes, who is also charged with disturbing the peace by telephone for lewd phone calls made and text messages sent to Gould’s parents, was being held without bail at Northeast Regional Correctional Facility.
