LEWISTON – Bryan Wholey scored 18 of his career-high 28 points in the first half to lead the No. 21 nationally-ranked Bates College men’s basketball to a 72-44 win over Tufts on Saturday.

Bates (14-2) built a 37-12 lead at the half and never looked back to earn its first conference win of the year. Rob Stockwell added 10 points while Zak Ray scored seven.

UMass-Dartmouth 64, USM 62

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Freshman guard Tyler Turtoro scored the game-winning layup in the final seconds Saturday to lift UMass-Dartmouth to a 64-62 win over the University of Southern Maine in men’s basketball.

The Huskies (9-8) got 20 from Drew Coppenrath and 16 from Nick Gooding.

Colby 60, Connecticut College 57

WATERVILLE – Nick Farrell scored 24 points and Mark Gaudet chipped in 12 to lead Colby College to a 60-57 win over Connecticut College in men’s basketball Saturday.

Shavar Bernier led Connecticut with 16 while Charles Stone had 11.

Castleton State 70, Thomas 54

WATERVILLE – Castleton State College broke open a five-point lead with a strong second half to beat Thomas 70-54 Saturday in men’s basketball action.

Joey Farley led Castleton with 24 points while Jeremy Jorgensen added 17 points and 16 rebounds. The Terriers got 15 from Adam Rich.

UMF 79, Johnson 46

FARMINGTON – Sean Fry scored 11 in the first half and finished with 16 to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to a 79-46 win over Johnson in men’s basketball Saturday.

Fry triggered a 10-0 run in the first half that opened up the lead. Isaac Hutchinson added 13 points while Josh Tanguay had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Beavers (7-8).

Zach Gervais led Johnson with 10.

Women’s basketball

Bowdoin 61, Wesleyan 58

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Alexa Kaubris hit a pair of free throws with 2:16 left to put Bowdoin College ahead for good Saturday in a 61-58 win in women’s basketball.

Kaubris finished with nine points for the Polar Bears (17-1). Eileen Flaherty led Bowdoin with 21 points and six rebounds. Jill Anelauskas added 15 points and six rebounds.

Wesleyan got 19 from Ali Fourney.

Maine 78, BU 73

ORONO – Bracey Barker scored 22 points and Ashley Underwood produced 20 to lead the University of Maine to a 78-73 win over Boston University Saturday in women’s basketball.

Barker also had eight rebounds for the Black Bears (9-8). Lindsey Hugstad-Vaa added 14.

Castleton State 61, Thomas 60

WATERVILLE – Kim Drosdik scored her 1,000th point and became just the 10th player in Thomas history to do so Saturday as the Terries lost a nail-biter to Castleton State College, 61-60 in women’s basketball.

Drosdik, a former Mt. Blue standout, reached her milestone three minutes into the game and finished with 13 points.

Tufts 72, Bates 64

MEDFORD, Mass. – Jenna Gomez, Kimberly Moynihan and Valerie Krah each scored in double figures to lead Tufts to a 72-64 win over Bates in women’s basketball Saturday.

Gomez had 17 points for the Jumbos (11-5) while Krah and Moynihan chipped in 16 and 15, respectively.

Bates (9-7) got 14 points each from Sarah Barton and Matia Kostakis while Val Beckwith added 12.

USM 73, UMass-Dartmouth 61

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass – Nicole Paradis scored a career-high 17 points to lead the University of Southern Maine to its 12th straight win in a 73-61 victory over UMass-Dartmouth in women’s basketball Saturday.

Ashley Marble added 15 while Stacey Kent scored 12 points and had eight rebounds for the fifth-ranked Huskies (15-1).

UMF 73, Johnson 38

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington remained unbeaten in league play with a 73-38 win over Johnson Saturday in women’s basketball.

Caitlyn Laflin has a career-high 24 points while Kari Simpson had 16 for UMF (12-3). The Beavers, 7-0 in conference play, jumped out to a 27-4 lead in the first 13 minutes.

Stephanie Bossie added 12 points and 10 rebounds for UMF while Erin Porter chipped in 10 points.

MMA 71, St. Joe’s 46

CASTINE – The Maine Maritime Academy women’s basketball team remained unbeaten Saturday with a convincing 71-46 win over St. Joe’s.

Alyssa Burns led the Mariners (15-0) with 21 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Shelley Gott-Stillwell added 13 points and pulled down six rebounds.

Megan Farrell led the Monks (6-10) with 16 while Meg Willette added 10.

Colby 54, Connecticut College 51

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Katie McCabe notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as Colby College picked up a 54-51 win over Connecticut College in NESCAC women’s basketball action Saturday.

McCabe shot 7-for-11 from the field as the Mules (4-11) fought back from a 32-29 halftime deficit to pull out the victory.

Hockey

USM 3, Babson 1

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Kyle Smith scored a pair of third-period goals to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 3-1 win over Babson in men’s college hockey Saturday.

Dave Beckles saved 39 shots to backstop the Huskies (11-5-1), which moved into first place in the ECAC Men’s East standings.

Smith broke the stalemate early in the third, tallying his fourth of the year.

Mark Carragher made it 2-0 for Huskies, but Babson got one back with a Brad Baldelli goal at 13:10. Smith tallied an empty-netter to extend USM’s unbeaten streak (5-0-1).

Colby 7, Tufts 2

MALDEN, Mass. – Patrick Rutherford scored two goals to lead Colby College to a 7-2 victory over Tufts in men’s hockey Saturday.

Rutherford and Matt Strickland scored goals in the opening period. Rutherford added his second goal of the game in the next period.

In the third, Rutherford set up Greg Osborne, who finished with a goal and three assists.

Colby goalie Ben Granjean stopped 13 of 15 shots he faced.
