Recently I received a cost of living allowance raise in my Social Security check. I was pleased to receive it, as I live month-to-month on that benefit, along with a small food stamp benefit.

But then I received a letter from the Maine Department of Human Services that the state, which administers the federal food stamp program, is cutting my food stamps by almost 50 percent.

Where is the justification in granting an approximate 3 percent increase in Social Security, then nullifying most of that by the cut in food stamps? The feds giveth, and the state taketh away.

What a shame.
