Dear Sun Spots: I’m a volunteer with Rebuilding Together Lewiston/Auburn and am wondering if you or column readers could please help us with finding homes for this year?

If you are a homeowner in the Auburn-Lewiston Area, are unable to keep up with the repairs that are required to keep a home safe and warm and have limited resources to provide but would like to have these services, we would love to help you and your family. We are looking for families whose financial hardship, age, and/or disability means they are unable to do the work themselves. We have a group of skilled and unskilled volunteers who work alongside able-bodied members of the recipient’s family and complete the repairs at no cost to the homeowner. It’s a wonderful team and community effort and we are ready, willing and able. All it takes are some families to assist.

The work is conducted on one weekend in April and we usually accept six to 10 houses for projects. This year’s Rebuilding Day will be April 21, and typically starts at 7 a.m., and closes around 3 p.m. Lunch and drinks are provided. We rely on unskilled labor and like to work with Bates College to coordinate our day with their Volunteer Day. We can usually count on about 60 to 100 students and alumni to volunteer. The work involved is typically work that can be completed over a weekend and includes such work as: installing handicap ramps, smoke or carbon monoxide detectors; bathroom grab bars; as well painting interior and exteriors, spring cleanup, sealing leaky windows and doors and more.

Interested homeowners fill out their application and send it to the address on the top of the application. Also, they must send along a copy of their W-2 of another document that indicates their financial status. The deadline is March 31, 2007, however, we are pretty flexible and will make exceptions if needed. The board reviews the applications, selects a house leader to determine the work to be completed on the home and then the makes a final decision on the houses to be worked on. The homeowner will then be advised. Applications may be found in Lewiston City Hall, Auburn City Hall, Community Concepts or local churches. Answer: In addition to responses from readers, Sun Spots has determined that the song was composed by Harry Pease and appears to have had several recordings made. Among them, the very one you recall by Lucille Starr. Sun Spots has not located any sheet music for it and wonders if perhaps other readers and fans of Pease might have it in their possession and be willing to share a copy with you.
