DIXFIELD – Dirigo slowly pulled away from pesky Winthrop in the second half behind Megan Russell and Nikki Kaulback for a 48-36 victory Friday.

With the Cougars nursing a 27-25 halftime lead, Russell scored all six of her points in the third quarter, which allowed Dirigo (15-0) to extend the advantage to 39-32. Kaulback sealed it by scoring all but one of Dirigo’s nine points in the final quarter.

Shannon Daley led Dirigo with 11 points and Kaulback had 10. Abby Fenstermacher had seven assists. Amanda Garwood scored 13 points and Katie Pushard 12 for Winthrop (6-8).

Hyde 51, Rangeley 30

RANGELEY – Stephanie Urzua poured in 16 points and Chelsea Malen added three 3-pointers to lead Hyde to a 51-30 Class D basketball win over Rangeley on Friday.

Hayley White, Angela White and Krista Brackett each had five points in the loss for the Lakers (8-4), who scored 20 of their 30 points from the charity stripe.

Madison 53, Telstar 48

BETHEL – Margo Russell scored a team-high 14 points and Briann Emery chipped in with 12 -including two 3-pointers – to lead Madison to a 53-48 win over Telstar in MVC basketball action Friday.

Brittany Rich also reached double figures for the Bulldogs (11-4) with 10 points.

Josie Reiss drained a game-high 17 for the Rebels (7-8), and Bailey Davis added 15 in the loss.

Jay 68, Georges Valley 37

JAY – Senior guard Kaylie DeMillo had a strong 23-point outing as Jay sailed to a 68-37 victory over Georges Valley in MVC girls’ basketball action Friday.

The Tigers (8-6) turned up the heat in the second stanza, following a 27-22 halftime lead, with a startling 28-13 run. DeMillo also posted 11 steals and six assists, while senior forward Kristen Adams tallied 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

The Buccaneers (6-8) struggled in the final frame, scoring only two points as time ran out. Junior forward Sam Buchanan posted 14 points, while Ashley Geel contributed 10 points for Georges Valley.

Lisbon 44, Carrabec 40

NORTH ANSON – Renee Moore poured in 16 points to lift Lisbon to a 44-40 win over Carrabec in MVC basketball action Friday.

Christy McAuliffe added 13 for the Greyhounds (7-7), who pulled away in the fourth after starting the period deadlocked at 31.

Erica French led all players with 19 points for the Cobras (1-13).

Mountain Valley 42, Wiscasset 36

RUMFORD – Lauren LePage led three players in double figures with 13 to help lift Mountain Valley to a 42-36 win over Wiscasset in MVC basketball action Friday.

Tanya Martin helped out with 11 points, including one 3-pointer, and Vanessa Cayer hit for 10 more for the Falcons (6-8).

Sarah Pierce led the Redskins (2-12) with 11 points.

Mt. Abram 55, Boothbay 36

SALEM – Brittany York dominated play with 22 points and 20 rebounds to power Mt. Abram to a 55-36 triumph over Boothbay.

The Roadrunners (8-7) sprinted to a 15-4 lead after one quarter and were never threatened.

Janessa Thomas added 10 points, while Kenni Norton had nine points, five assists and four steals, and Loghan Walker had seven assists.

Ali Hartley led Boothbay (4-10) with 18 points.

Boys’ basketball
Maranacook 76, MCI 55

READFIELD – Ryan Martin hit 11 field goals – including two from beyond the arc – and added five free throws for 29 points to push Maranacook past MCI 76-55 on Friday.

Mike Poulin added 17 for the Black Bears (14-1), while Kevin Leary totalled 13 points and six blocks.

Troy Murray led all scorers for MCI (10-4) with 16 points, and Benson Mensah-Bonson added 13.

Hockey
Hebron 2, Berwick 0

HEBRON – Carmine Zegarelli scored the eventual game-winning goal as Hebron slid to a 2-0 victory over Berwick in hockey action Friday.

The Lumberjacks (15-5) were tough on defense as goalie Jon Galant turned back all 17 shots he faced. Joe King recorded an empty net goal for Hebron at the 14:50 mark of the third period for insurance in the final seconds.

Berwick goalie Chris DeSmith made 29 saves.
