The leaders of the town of Gray who are willing to misrepresent their situation by declaring their town a “slum” should be ashamed. The fact that they have said they are intending to do away with that designation, if they are unsuccessful in their attempt to obtain public monies, comes dangerously close to fraud, in my opinion, and is little different than, for example, the individuals who illegally misrepresent their health or financial condition in order to receive assistance.

Obviously, some town leaders cannot be allowed to make those decisions, which need to fairly ascertained by an impartial authority.

Those town officials are setting a very poor example and should reconsider their actions.

Editor’s Note: The Gray Town Council voted Jan. 16 to declare its village district a “slum” to qualify for community redevelopment grants.
