LEWISTON – Bangor coach Ted Taylor wasn’t fooled.

“To come down here and play (Lewiston) in this building, it’s always tough,” Taylor said. “Their record isn’t an accurate description of the kind of team they have. They’re a lot better than that.”

Buoyed by a couple of good bounces, a steady forecheck and a second solid outing in a row from goaltender Alex Lafreniere, the Blue Devils went a long way toward proving Taylor right Tuesday night.

Jordan Bourgoin scored a pair of goals, and Robbie Leeman added another as Lewiston grinded out a 3-1 win over the visiting Rams at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

“This was Lewiston hockey,” Lewiston coach Norm Gagne said. “We drove the net, looked for rebounds, moved our legs. I think after Saturday’s tie (against St. Dom’s), we needed to build momentum off of that, and I think we did that tonight.”

The win was also a come-from-behind win for Lewiston, its first of the season.

“We needed that for our confidence,” Bourgoin said. “We finally got some bounces our way tonight.”

Robbie Leeman got the first Lewiston bounce of the night, gratis Bangor freshman goalie Zach Hamilton. Trailing 1-0 after an Alex Moores goal, Lewiston defenseman Tim Gilbert dumped the puck in past Hamilton. The young goalie turned to play the puck, but it bounced over his catching glove and back in front. Leeman charged the net and slid the puck in to knot the score.

Bourgoin got the next bounce – a carrom off the back boards on a Casey Poussard shot – and buried his chance to put Lewiston ahead 2-1 at 6:36 of the third. “At some rinks, it doesn’t bounce like that,” Bourgoin said. “We got a good bounce, finally.”

It was Bourgoin who potted the game’s final goal, too, on a pass from his goalie.

“That was all luck,” Bourgoin said. “I just wanted to get it out.”

The puck rolled into the net just as Hamilton reached his bench for an extra skater.

After a back-and-forth defensive struggle in the opening frame (both teams managed just six shots on goal), Ian Doucette nearly made it 1-0 for the Blue Devils at 12:11 of the second, a period Lewiston more or less dominated. Doucette grabbed a tip-feed from Matt Letourneau at the left circle and ripped a wrist shot that just clipped the crossbar and sailed into the protective netting beyond the glass.

The Rams came back the other way, and Lafreniere flashed his glove to stop a puck headed into the top right corner to keep the game scoreless.

“I’m finally in a groove,” Lafreniere said. “It ‘s taken a while, but I feel good out there right now.”

That shot was one of just two scoring chances for Bangor in the middle frame and one of just five shots.
