AUBURN – “Woman is the Future of Man,” a powerful drama about two childhood friends and their common interest in a woman, will be shown Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 7-8, as part of L/A Arts’ International Film Series in partnership with Central Maine Community College

The film, directed by Hong Sangsoo, in Korean with English subtitles, will be shown at 7 p.m. both days in Kirk Hall Auditorium at the college.

As the first snow falls on Seoul, two childhood friends reunite over food and drinks at a local noodle shop. Hunjoon, played by Kim Taewoo, has just returned from the United States, where he had been studying filmmaking. Munho, played by Yoo Jitae, is a university arts professor with dreams of tenure. He has married since his buddy Hunjoon set off for America. As the two old friends chat about the years gone by, the drinks flow and their musing turns to the beautiful Sunhwa, played by Sung Hyunah.

Sunhwa and Hunjoon dated prior to his leaving for the States. Although he promised to continue the relationship during his studies abroad, he abandoned her and their proposed future together. The two former lovers haven’t spoken to each other in years, but memories kick in, and Hunjoon decides he’d like to see her again.

Munho knows that Sunhwa has settled into a neighboring town not far from where the two friends are, but he wavers over whether to join Hunjoon on his spur-of-the-moment drunken quest to surprise her.

Unbeknownst to Hunjoon, Munho seduced a heartbroken and vulnerable Sunhwa shortly after Hunjoon left for the United States. While he, too, would like to see Sunhwa again, Munho’s lasting friendship with Hunjoon could be threatened by such a reunion. However, Hunjoon’s persistence and Munho’s shared desire to see Sunhwa prevails, and the two best friends set off to visit the woman they once both loved.
