LEWISTON – At least for one night, the Lewiston Maineiacs found their elixir.

Three different Maineiacs registered two goals each and Peter Delmas made 31 saves to earn a victory, leading Lewiston to a 7-2 win over the hapless Saint John Sea Dogs in front of 2,186 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Wednesday.

“Two points for us are gold right now,” Maineiacs coach Clem Jodoin said. “We need to play like the Lewiston Maineiacs can play all the time, with intensity like we had tonight.”

The Maineiacs had dropped three in a row on a recent trip to Nova Scotia, and according to Jodoin, had “not been scoring like (they) needed to score.”

“We have been having a hard time to score,” said Maineiacs’ forward Eric Castonguay. “To get this many tonight, this was big to build momentum.”

Usual suspects David Perron and Castonguay each potted a pair of goals in the win for the Maineiacs, but often-overlooked defenseman Marc-Andre Crete had a career night by scoring a pair of his own.

Delmas, meanwhile, carried a shutout late into the second period, but the Sea Dogs scored a pair of 5-on-3 goals late in that frame to break up that bid.

“The more I play, the better I feel in there,” Delmas said. “It’s more comfortable now to play with each game.”

The win over Saint John is Lewiston’s seventh victory of the season over the Sea Dogs, and ninth in a row dating back to last season.

Former Lewiston netminder Travis Fullerton suffered his second consecutive rough outing for Saint John, which also lost Sunday to Rimouski, 12-3.

“He has to be sharper than that,” Sea Dogs’ Jacques Beaulieu said. “We can’t play like we played tonight and compete with (the Maineiacs).”

Lewiston has now officially clinched a playoff spot with its 34th win of the season.

Castonguay started the Lewiston onslaught at 8:25 of the first after a laser pass from Chad Denny found the 19-year-old forward streaking through the center zone. Castonguay fired a wrist shot low to Fullerton’s glove side and into the net to put Lewiston ahead 1-0.

At 13:26, Castonguay recorded his second of the period on a rebound, and Perron netted his first at 17:28 to push the Lewiston lead to 3-0.

Crete lofted an innocent-looking backhander toward the front of the net and hit Fullerton in the back to score at 5:58 of the second, Perron notched his second at 9:21 and Crete added his second at 15:54 as he rushed hard for a rebound in the crease.

“I missed my shot but it went on on my first one,” Crete said. “The second one, I think it was going in anyway, but I made sure to push it over the line. I feel bad for Manson (who had the original shot), but it was good.”

The Sea Dogs scored a pair late in the middle frame on consecutive 5-on-3 power plays.

Pierre-Luc Faubert finished a perfect power-play goal on tic-tac-toe passing from Stefan Chaput and Michal Korenko at 17:24 of the third to cap the scoring.

Lewiston returns to home ice Friday and Saturday for a pair of games against the struggling Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
