FARMINGTON – The Universityof Maine at Farmington rode 21 points from Kari Simpson in her final regular season home game to a 69-51 win over Husson in women’s college basketball action Monday night.

With the victory, UMF (20-3) clinched the 2007 North Atlantic Conference regular season conference championship and will be the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

Simpson was 7-of-15 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line on her way to her 29th career 20-point game. She also added 10 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals.

Carmen Ballard led Husson with 14 points, while Jenny Rollins added 11.

Men’s basketball

Husson 65, UMF 63

FARMINGTON – Pat Howell’s lay-up at the end of the first overtime popped out, allowing the Husson men’s basketball team to remain undefeated in conference play with a 65-63 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington Monday night.

The win improves the Braves’ record to 18-5 overall, while UMF falls to 9-14.

Sean Fry led the Beavers with a career-high 29 points, including a three-pointer in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime, while Tyler Muzzy led Husson with 20.

UMF led at the half, 26-25. But the Eagles opened the second half with a 12-3 run. UMF refused to fold, pulling to within one, 45-44, on a Howell lay-up with just over nine minutes to go.

Husson led by three, 58-55, following a Martin Cleveland lay-up with :30 to play, but Fry knocked down a three from the top of the key with :09 left to force overtime.

In the extra session, Husson struck first, but UMF took a 61-60 lead on a Fry basket at the 3:41 mark. A free throw from Jason Harvey and a lay-up from Brock Bradford on successive possessions gave Husson a 64-61 lead.

Although UMF drew within one on a basket from Isaac Hutchinson on the next possession, Husson hit three free throws over the final minute to preserve the victory.

Hutchinson added 13 for the Beavers, while Fry led both teams with 11 boards for his third double-double of the season and second in as many games. Kissinger and Harvey added 14 apiece for Husson.
