The Acadie-Bathurst Titan scored seven times in the second period – four of which came on the power play – and wiped the Lewiston Maineiacs off the ice at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre in an 8-3 triumph Friday in front of 2,308.

“We gave them power plays. We had no focus,” Maineiacs coach Clem Jodoin said. “We had two players get injured, too, which changed the whole puzzle of the hockey team.”

Stefan Chaput will not dress for today’s game in Bathurst after suffering a concussion. Marc-Andre Daneau will be out with a minor knee injury, and Danick-Hudon Paquette will be out after he received an instigating penalty.

“We might have two defensemen at forward (tonight),” Jodoin said.

Martin Bartos scored a hat trick in that second period, and he and Maxime Pomerleau had five points each to lead the fifth-place Titan, who defeated the Maineiacs for just the second time this season.

Lewiston had won three consecutive games and started the week with a six-point lead on Cape Breton for first place in the Eastern Division. The Screaming Eagles swept St. John’s on the road this week. Lewiston’s lead is just two points, though the Maineiacs still hold two games in hand.

“I’m not even looking at first place right now,” Jodoin said. “We have to deal with how we’re going to play with our injuries.”

The Maineiacs played a solid first period, and held a 2-1 lead on goals from Eric Castonguay and Stefan Chaput.

“We played a hell of a first period,” Jodoin said, “but then we lost our focus.”

In the second, amid a smattering of penalties against Lewiston, the Titan took over. Bartos scored a pair just 1:17 apart to give the Titan their first lead, and Pomerleau, Jordan Clendenning, Eric Faille and Marc-Antoine Desnoyers followed to put Acadie- Bathurst ahead 7-2.

Pierre-Luc Faubert added the Maineiacs’ third goal at 19:07 of the second, only to watch as Bartos completed his hat trick 37 seconds later.

The teams played a scoreless third period.

Peter Delmas stopped just 20 of 28 shots in the loss. Brant Miller got the win in net for the Titan with 34 saves.

The same two teams play against tonight in Bathurst.
