GREENE – Alice Johnson, the 77-year-old Wales woman known for cruising the county roads on her three-wheeled bicycle, was seriously injured Wednesday when she rode her bike into a parked truck.
Police said Johnson was riding down Bull Run Road when she struck the back of the truck, suffering broken bones and a head injury.
Johnson was listed in serious condition Thursday at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Johnson is a well-known figure around Wales, Monmouth, Sabattus, Leeds and Greene where she rides her bike in good weather and bad.
In a 2003 interview, Johnson said she averaged roughly 12 miles a day on her bike, logging 10,000 miles since 1993.
Johnson said in 2003 she began running errands by bike after her husband died of cancer. She doesn’t drive and had to walk everywhere, she said. Then one of her sons suggested she get a bike, and that was that.
She picked up a dark blue 2001 FS Elite Tri-Coaster with a basket in back, a small American flag, a rearview mirror and a 5-foot pole with a faded red reflective flag.
By July 2001, she had logged more than 4,000 miles on the bike. At the time of the 2003 interview, she said her longest ride was an 18-mile round trip jaunt to Lewiston.
“I’m free to come and go as I want to, when I want to,” Johnson said at the time.
It was not immediately clear if Johnson was riding the Elite Tri-Coaster Wednesday when she crashed. Maine State Police were called to the scene to assist paramedics, but because the truck was not in motion, there was no active investigation.
