ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) – Bret Tyler and Mike Hamilton scored second-period goals 4 minutes apart, lifting Maine to a 3-1 win over Massachusetts in the NCAA hockey tournament East Regional championship game Saturday.

Matt Duffy also scored while Billy Ryan and Josh Soares added two assists each in helping the Black Bears (23-14-2) advance to their second consecutive Frozen Four, sixth since 1999 and 11th overall. Ben Bishop stopped 35 shots – including five in the final 90 seconds – as Maine also made up for losing four straight games to UMass earlier this month, including a two-game sweep in the Hockey East quarterfinals.

P.J. Fenton scored for the Minutemen (21-13-5), who were making their first tournament appearance and coming off a 1-0 overtime win Saturday over top-seeded Clarkson.

The No. 3-seeded Black Bears never trailed, and had their two first goals come as a result of fortunate bounces.

Tyler scored 5 minutes into the second period when his shot from the slot was stopped by Jon Quick, but the rebound caromed in off UMass defenseman Mike Kostka. Hamilton scored on a heads-up play from behind the net, backhanding a shot in off the back of Quick’s head.

Fenton, tipping in Matt Anderson’s shot point, cut Maine’s lead to 2-1 late in the second period, but the Black Bears put it away on Duffy’s power-play goal 6 minutes into the third.

Bishop played a key role, the 6-foot-7 goalie making only his second start after missing all four games against UMass this month because of a groin injury.

His best stop was a clutch glove save to foil Chris Capraro hard one-timer from the slot with 3 minutes left in the second period. This year’s Frozen Four will be held in St. Louis in two weeks, with Maine facing the winner of the Midwest Regional final between Michigan State and Notre Dame.
