The front page of the Sun Journal sports section on March 20 was packed with all kinds of articles about junior racers of the downhill skiing variety.

I was disheartened to see that there was not one mention of nordic skiing, even after I had contacted the Sun Journal several times about the huge, high school championship races being held in Rangeley – the TD Banknorth Eastern High School Championship races (March 16-18).

The event featured teams of the finest high school nordic skiers from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York, racing for the title of top skier in New England. There was plenty of color, activity and racing excitement to have made a fabulous article, but nobody from the Sun Journal was there to cover it, even after the weather cleared.

By all accounts, this event put the Rangeley Lakes Cross Country Ski Club and the Rangeley Lakes Trails Center “on the map” for hosting more events like this one – three days, 500 people, 220 racers, lots of awards and prestige. Perhaps the next time the paper is contacted about an event of this magnitude, it could cover it.

I can guarantee that there were future Olympians in this crowd.

Carol Sullivan, Rangeley

President, Rangeley Lakes Cross Country Ski Club
