RUMFORD – Morgan Concrete of Rumford continued its dynasty in the Mountain Valley Rec League, capturing the post-season championship with a hard-fought 97-79 victory over Dave’s Sauna of South Paris.

Dave’s led for about three-quarters of the game. The Concretemen managed to clamp down on the defensive end and use its height advantage in the final 8 minutes to overtake its foe and open up a commanding lead.

Morgan missed the leadership of its standout point guard, Craig Milledge, who was nursing a broken hand. If it wasn’t for Todd Wheeler’s 16 first half points inside, the 41-37 halftime deficit could have been worse. Mike Toohey of Dave’s was hot early with 16 first half points.

The Morgan comeback came late. Eric Canwell ignited the team with 3 quick inside buckets. Scott New, the league’s MVP, and Kevin Gallant got hot from 3-point range as the league champs steadily pulled away.

Wheeler led all scorers with 27 points. Canwell finished with 23, New with 20 and Gallant with 17 (4 threes). Dave’s was paced by Toohey with 24. Brian Hamlin added 15 and Will Gravier 11.

Dave’s, who finished third in the league with a 5-7 record, played well in the last few games of the regular season and the playoffs. The Concretemen were unbeaten and heavy favorites to win the crown.

On March 30, 31 and April 1, the league will again sponsor its invitational tournament to benefit the American Lung Association of Maine. There will be 16 teams and 2 divisions.
