LEWISTON – The U.S. Navy Blacklions of Strike Fighter Squadron Two Thirteen (VFA-213) have chosen Chief Aviation Structural Mechanic (AW) Russell W. Sites, formerly of Lewiston, as Strike Fighter Wing CPO of the Year.

Sites has led by example and been the squadron’s “go-to” chief throughout their transition from the F-14D Tomcat to the F/A-18F Super Hornet. Sites is constantly seen on the flightline, ensuring the jets are ready to launch, fly and recover safely.

His desire to see the squadron and especially the sailors who serve under him excel has been readily apparent.

In a ceremony held Feb. 13, Sites was recognized by Rear Admiral Michael Vitale, Commander, Carrier Strike Group TWO, as the Commander, Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic Chief Petty Officer of the Year.

The award is given to the best chief from all Strike Fighter Squadrons on the East Coast.

Sites’ dedication to service and his country was the key to the squadron’s outstanding performance over the past year. “It is my honor to recognize the hard work and devotion to naval aviation that Chief Sites has displayed during his time as a Blacklion. I am proud to have him as a member of my squadron,” said Commander Paul Gronemeyer, Commanding Officer, VFA-213.

Sites’ wife, Rhonda, was present during the ceremony. After the ceremony Sites commented, “It is my family and friends who made me who I am today. This award reflects upon all of them, and I am very grateful.”

Sites attended Lewiston High School and his grandmother, Janice Sites, is a Lewiston resident.
