AUGUSTA – A visit with Gov. John Baldacci and a special invitation to stand on the floor of the House and be applauded by Speaker of the House Glenn Cummings were highlights for representatives from Maine’s credit unions attending the 11th annual Maine Credit Union Day at the State House on March 27.
Local credit unions represented included Community, Five County, Maine Family, Rainbow and Ste. Croix Regional in Lewiston, Otis in Jay and Oxford in Mexico.
More than 80 representatives from 34 credit unions were welcomed by the governor and spent the morning visiting with their local legislators over coffee and pastries in the Hall of Flags.
A joint resolution, sponsored by Speaker Cummings and Senate President Beth Edmonds, was read in the House and Senate.
The reading of the House resolution was noteworthy because the Speaker invited the credit union representatives to the floor of the House and listen to the reading of the resolution.
The Speaker recognized Maine’s credit unions “for a long and impressive record of service and assistance to Maine people.” After the resolution was presented, the Speaker invited attendees forward to be formally recognized by the entire House.
John Murphy, president of the Maine Credit Union League, said, “We had another strong turnout for this event and it again helps us maintain a strong presence in Augusta and strong relationships with our legislators. Being invited on to the floor of the House of Representatives was a thrill for our attendees and a nice gesture by the Speaker.”
