WELLS – Tyler Merchant dropped in a single with two outs in the seventh inning to score the winning run as Poland downed Wells 3-2 in a baseball opener for both teams.

Poland, the home team because its field is still not ready, scored runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to erase a 2-0 deficit.

Joe Douglass came on in the fifth inning for the Patriots and struck out four in two and a third innings for the victory. Demetri Gatzogiannis took the loss for Wells. Gatzogiannis and Nick Farrer each had a pair of hits in the loss.

Lacrosse

Lewiston 11, Cony 3

LEWISTON – Tim Gilbert scored five goals and Ben Landry added two to lead Lewiston to an 11-3 boys’ lacrosse victory over Cony on Friday at Bates College.

The Blue Devils (2-0) blew the game open with five unanswered goals in the second period to extend their lead to 9-2 by halftime.

Alex Stone, John Roy, Nate Rivet and Devin McClellan also scored for Lewiston. Jon Collette and Alex Pare combined for five saves in goal. Matt Bolduc scored two goals for Cony.

Softball

Poland 6, Wells 3

WELLS – Kristen Simpson’s bases-loaded triple highlighted a six-run outburst in the fifth inning to lift Poland to a season-opening 6-3 triumph over Wells. Simpson also tossed a four-hitter and struck out seven for the pitching victory. Nicole Chinnock, Alicia Dube and Toni Ritchie added RBI singles in the decisive fifth inning.

Wells scored all three runs in the sixth, beginning with a triple by Lyn Cusuck and Jill Blier’s RBI double. The Warriors then added two unearned runs. Losing pitcher Amy Stone had 10 strikeouts.
