PHILADELPHIA – Christie Bernier continues to gain recognition on the national racewalk scene by finishing sixth in the junior 5-kilometer race Saturday at the Penn Relays.

The Edward Little High School freshman was timed in 29 minutes, 16.74 seconds. Bernier, 14, the youngest competitor, finished three minutes behind winner Diana Rado of Mielec, Poland. The event was open to racewalkers up to age 19.

She finished 13th overall out of the 24 walkers in both the junior and senior divisions.

Bernier, who earned All-America honors during the indoor season, was taking a huge step up in distance at the Penn Relays. The 5K distance is three times farther than the 1,600-meter distance she’ll compete at during the high school season with Edward Litttle.

Also competing in the junior girls’ race was Sara Adams of Lisbon, who was 12th in the junior race in 31:35.48.

Lisbon’s Tyler Campbell, competing in his first 10K, placed fourth in the boys’ junior racewalk in 57:40.05. Matthew Fourgues of Boothbay took the silver medal in 52:33.40.
