The new Kate Schrock Trio will celebrate Cinco de Mayo beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the St. Lawrence Arts and Community Center in Portland. Schrock blends roots rock, jazz and gospel with a pop angle to create dark emotional melodies and musical textures. Critics have likened her to Aimee Mann and Joni Mitchell with a bit of Rickie Lee Jones. The trio features accomplished multi-instrumentalist Marc Chillemi on drums and horns; jazz and classical guitarist (and Mexico City native) Jeff Rojo; and Schrock on piano and vocals. This concert is the group’s first public performance. Schrock and Chillemi were featured at the sold-out Merrill Auditorium tribute to the late Hanley Denning this past March. Schrock expects to release her new album, “Invocation,” this summer. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door at all Bull Moose record stores and at the St. Lawrence box office, (207) 775-5568, and [email protected]. The community center is at 79 Congress St.
