A former local woman was shot to death Sunday by her estranged husband in Bayard, Iowa, officials said.
Kimberly A. Ormsby Johnson, 37, was a native of Brunswick who had lived in Auburn and Mechanic Falls and graduated from the Bernard School of Hair Fashion in Lewiston.
Her estranged husband, Johnny Lee Johnson, 42, of Coon Rapids, Iowa, was charged Monday with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the killings of Johnson and Gregory Allen White, 38, at her apartment, Guthrie County sheriff’s officials said. Johnny Johnson surrendered after the shooting Sunday night.
The killings were the first in Bayard – a town of 550 – in decades.
The couple met while Johnny was serving in the Marine Corps about 20 years ago. They moved to the rural Coon Rapids area to raise their children, who are now teenagers.
Kimberly and the children returned to her home state of Maine about a year ago, but the family later reunited, though the marriage remained strained. Kimberly Johnson moved to the apartment in Bayard about a month ago after filing for divorce, sheriff’s officials said.
Authorities have released few details about the events leading up to and surrounding the deaths. The shootings were reported by Jessica Johnson, 15, who ran from the apartment, neighbors said.
According to Kimberly Johnson’s obituary, she married Johnny Lee Johnson in Brunswick in 1988 and had lived in Iowa since 1989.
