FREEPORT – The Oratorio Chorale, under the direction of Peter Frewen, will offer the lyrical music of Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn in the final concert of its 2006-07 season. The concert will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Freeport Performing Arts Center in Freeport, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at State Street Church in Portland.
The Maine Chamber Ensemble and soloists Bonnie Scarpelli, Sara Sturdivant, Timothy Neill Johnson and Peter Allen will join the chorale in presenting Schubert’s soaring “Missa Solemnis in A-flat Major.”
Frewen wrote of Schubert: “The lyric poet of sound expressed in all his music his transcendent aspiration for the human spirit. Art, he (Schubert) wrote, should dissolve people in love, lift them up to God.”
Six folk songs of Mendelssohn and “two short, sweet elegies” by Schumann further “extend and concentrate this strand of Romantic lyricism,” noted Frewen.
Schubert’s “Overture to The Magic Harp” will complete the program.
Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door; students half-price; children under 12, free.
Tickets are available at Starbird Music and Longfellow Books in Portland; Books Etc. in Falmouth; Clayton’s in Yarmouth; Gulf of Maine Bookstore in Brunswick; Mason Street Mercantile and Magnolia’s in Bath; Treats in Wiscasset; and The Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta. Tickets are also available from any chorale member.
