FARMINGTON – Maine Mountain Chamber Music will perform a concert of music from China, India, Spain and Germany Sunday, May 27, in Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington.
Yuri Funahashi and Laurie Kennedy, directors of MMCM, have invited two musicians to join them in this celebration of music from around the world: cellist Elizabeth Anderson and violinist Jesse Mills. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.
“This program will be like taking a quick world tour. Bright Sheng combines the inflections of the Chinese language and Western musical language to evoke the landscape and sounds of his native country. You will hear the distinctive sounds of a Chinese temple and the joyful folk songs of Se-Tsuan,” said Funahashi. “What amazes me is that he is able to create these unique sounds, using innovative ways of playing the instruments of the traditional piano trio (violin, cello and piano).”
“Turina’s music, on the other hand, is distinctively Spanish,” Funahashi said. “In this quartet, you will hear flamenco rhythms and harmonies, Andalusian guitar style and improvisational passages. In this compact work, there is great sensuality, a wide range of tonal colors and powerful passion.
Anderson has recorded for RCA Red Seal, Telarc and Nonesuch. As a concerto soloist, she has performed with the Helsinki Chamber, Aspen and Israel Chamber orchestras, and at numerous music festivals. She has released a CD, “Latifa Noor,” which includes Indian Raga improvisations inspired by Sufi Hazrat Inayat Khan. Anderson performs at Lincoln Center as a member of the New York City Opera Orchestra.
Mills has performed as soloist with the Juilliard Pre-College Chamber Orchestra, the Teatro Argentino Orchestra in Buenos Aires, and many other symphony orchestras. As a chamber musician, he has performed in such venues as Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and New York City’s Merkin Concert Hall and Bargemusic, and at the Marlboro Music Festival. He performed on the opening night of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s “A Great Day in New York” series with pianist/composer Peter Schickele. Mills received a bachelor of music degree from The Juilliard School in 2001.
