• A large and modern barrel mill has been erected on the west side of Lake Auburn, near what is known as the Round Top, by W. A. Bridgham of Minot and is now in full operation. The mill is modern in every particular, and the latest and best machinery has been installed. The mill is also equipped with a whistle that is blown three times each day, at 6 a.m., noon and 6 p.m.

DETROIT – The disclosure that the Major Leagues’ top batter and several other professional athletes in Detroit are taking “tranquilizing drugs” to ease nervous tension drew both praise and a warning today from the new team physician of the Detroit Tigers.
Dr. Luther R. Leader said the tranquilizing drugs that apparently have helped third baseman Reno Bertoia may have a bad effect on other people. He warned against over-the-counter sale of the drugs often referred to as “happiness pills.”
PORTLAND – A vice president of the First National Bank of Boston said today that automation in checking procedures is needed as banks approach a turnover of 14 billion checks annually by 1960.

LISBON – With only 871 of Lisbon’s 5,430 eligible registered voters turning out, chairman of the Board of Selectmen Ronald Anctil was defeated in his bid for re-election, 425-307, by James A. Bennett of Lisbon Falls, a newcomer to the political scene. At age 21, Bennett is believed to be the youngest person ever to have held the post of selectmen.
• According to Uniform Crime Reporting statistics compiled by the Maine Department of Public Safety, the total crime rate (the number of crimes reported per 1,000 population) in Auburn was 76.01 in 1981, the highest in Androscoggin County but down from 1980’s rate of 76.82.
