• Adule Laplante of 53 Maple St., Lewiston, yesterday received from a friend in Rumford Falls a handsome 2-month-old cub. It is a genuine “Teddy Bear” and while not much larger than a good-sized cat, the cub is quite a vicious little fellow and knows how to bite as its new owner can testify. Last evening, Mr. Laplante had his “miniature bruin” on a chain leading it about town. The procession attracted much attention.

• The horse owned by George C. Judkins ran away down Lisbon Street yesterday afternoon, causing no little excitement for the time being. The horse was caught down by Cedar Street. No damage resulted.

50 years ago, 1957

PORTLAND – An unseasonal frost today dealt severe damage to early strawberries and other crops in the Portland area. One strawberry grower said his 10-acre crop suffered about $4,000 damage when the temperature skidded early this morning to 27 degrees, a record low for this date.

• Principal Arnold G. Westerberg of Edward Little High School said last night he had not heard of reports that at least some Auburn senior and junior high school boys are carrying so-called switchblade knives. Some of the Auburn girls of high school age have reportedly said the boys are carrying knives.

25 years ago, 1982

• Auburn students acting as mayor and councilmen on Monday asked the city to continue sponsorship of a summer recreation program for the handicapped and consider an Auburn location for the program.

Twenty-two student council members from Edward Little High School and Walton Junior High School got a firsthand look at city government during Student Government Day. Several students acted as city officials at Monday evening’s City Council meeting, voting on four resolves of their own.

• Following an investigation by the Lewiston Police Department into alleged problems stemming from activities near The Cage at 97-99 Ash St., City Administrator Lucien B. Gosselin has recommended that the bar be granted a new liquor license application.
