TURNER – SAD 52 Adult and Community Education is offering academic summer classes in math, English, creative writing, biology, general science, U.S. history, world studies and government for high school students who have taken, but did no pass, the class(es) during the 2006-07 academic school year.

Upon successful completion of a class, students will receive high school credit. The student is responsible to assure through their guidance department that the courses will fulfill their high school credit requirements and be accepted by their school.

The general science class will mirror the content of a typical high school freshman science course and will begin Thursday, June 14. Topics will include astronomy, meteorology and geology. The class will be held at Leavitt Area High School.

Students enrolled in general biology starting Monday, July 9, will study the cellular process, organism biology, genetics, ecology and the environment. A lab has been scheduled as part of the class as well as video presentation. The class is appropriate for high school students and individuals who want to attend college.

“Myths and Legends,” an English creative writing course, will start Wednesday, June 20, and run for five weeks. The class will include a presentation, hands-on art project and independent reading, with a focus on writing skills via creative writing assignments.

U.S. history, world studies and government is a fast-paced intensive class with a focus on U.S. and world history. Students must be able to work well in a group. Hands-on work and projects are a major part of the course. The class will start Monday, June 25, and be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The last class will be July 5. Because of the fast-paced environment, students must commit to attend each day to earn credit.

A condensed fast-paced English class with study in writing, American literature, authors and classics will run from July 6 through 17. Hands-on work, independent reading, presentations and writing are all part of the course. Students need to supply pen/pencil, paper and a three-ring binder.

The above two compressed classes are designed for the summer school student who needs to complete the required hours and course work in a shorter period of time due to summer work schedules.

Math classes will begin Monday, July 16, and include general math, algebra I and II and geometry. Students have the option to attend either the day or evening class. The day class runs July 16 through Aug. 3, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. The evening class runs July 17 through Aug. 10, Monday through Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m.

Biology, English, math and U.S. history classes will be held at the Adult Learning Center, 486 Turner Center Road. Registration fees are due at sign-up.
