AUGUSTA (AP) – Majority Democrats picked up a seat in the Maine House of Representatives as Deane Jones of Mount Vernon was elected Tuesday to fill a seat vacated by the death of Republican Rep. Abigail Holman of Fayette.

Jones defeated Republican Penelope Morrell of Belgrade, 1,469 to 1,180, according to unofficial returns. House District 83 also includes the towns of Manchester and Vienna.

Jones’ election will give the Democrats an 89-60 edge over Republicans in a chamber that also has two independent members.

Jones, 68, is retired from J.S. McCarthy Printers in Augusta and was a selectman in Mount Vernon for 18 years.

Holman died in a skiing accident in April.
