AUGUSTA – Madeleine L. Plante Genest, 79, after persevering through a long bout of cancer, succumbed to its effects on Thursday, June 28. Even in her last days, her pain and suffering did not diminish her spirit which so many loved.

She was born in Augusta, on March 28, 1928, a daughter of Thomas and Alma (Patenaude) Plante. She attended schools in Berlin, N.H., and Jackman, graduating from Sacred Heart Academy.

Madeleine and Nelson Genest married Nov. 19, 1955, where upon they began a life-long journey of devotion and happiness.

They raised three beautiful daughters and later were deeply involved in the lives of their four grandchildren. Together they owned and successfully operated their renowned restaurant, “Bolley’s Famous Franks.”

She lived with a level of class that left a lasting impression on those who met her. Her competitive and good-humored nature was always welcoming to those who were in her company.

She was devoted to St. Augustine’s Church and many clubs, such as the Ladies of Ste. Anne, Daughters of Isabella, and The Red Hat Society. She was an avid card player, playing small quarter games with her friends weekly.

Of all the passions in her life, she enjoyed attending events in the lives of her children and grandchildren the most. From plays to sporting events to graduations, she was there, always the proudest spectator in the group.

She is survived by her daughters; Susan Genest of Augusta, and Elizabeth Tanguay and her husband, Peter, of Gorham; four special grandchildren: Leanne (Barry) DiMaio and her husband, Nicholas, of Buckfield, Michelle Barry of Augusta, Joshua and Luke Tanguay of Gorham; a brother-in-law, Royal “Tom” Genest and his wife, Madeline, of Augusta; a sister-in-law, Carmel Plante of Augusta; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Nelson; a daughter, Monique Barry; parents, Thomas and Alma Plante; sisters, Rita, Alice and Cecilia; and brothers, Arthur and Clem.
