LEWISTON – A Lewiston woman who heard a funny noise coming from her engine as she drove down Sabattus Street on Sunday evening pulled over and got out of her car only moments before it burst into flames.

According to police Lt. James Minkowsky, Lisa Bureau, 37, of 43 Autumn Lane in Lewiston, stopped her 1999 Chevrolet Blazer in front of Lighting Concepts just in time.

“She said she smelled smoke, got out and watched the SUV become engulfed by flames,” Minkowsky said.

Lewiston firefighters were dispatched at 7:45 p.m. to douse the fire, while officers redirected traffic down Grove Street.

Bureau was not hurt. She had no passengers with her.

Her vehicle was totaled, though, by the fire.

“Right now, the cause of the fire is unknown,” Minkowsky said. “It could have been electrical or mechanical or a number of other things.”
