BRUNSWICK – “This play is a dog. That’s why we chose it,” Artistic Director Al Miller said of Theater Project’s show opening Friday, July 13.

That’s because “Sylvia,” by A.R. Gurney, revolves around Greg and Kate, a married couple, and Sylvia, a stray dog Greg picks up in Central Park. Sylvia is the answer to Greg’s problems; but to Kate, the dog is the problem with Greg’s answers. To Sylvia, Greg is God, and Kate is a tyrant.

Greg and Kate packed their two kids off to college and moved from a house in the suburbs to an apartment in New York. Kate is engrossed in a new career in the city’s public schools, while Greg grows increasingly unhappy with his job.

Sylvia – apparently the cause of the couple’s problems – becomes the catalyst for surprises that culminate in the play’s ending.

Four Theater Project veterans are cast in “Sylvia”: Reba Short, Craig Ela, Heather Weafer, and Michele Livermore Wigton.

“Sylvia” will run through Sunday, July 29. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday.
