BETHEL – Approximately 25 Bethel Historical Society members turned out for the “Remembering Time” for outstanding longtime volunteer Persis “Sis” G. Post held on July 1 in the meeting room of the Dr. Moses Mason House.

Post, who died in January 2007, was an active volunteer at the society for more than 20 years. She was recalled for her enthusiasm for all things historical and for her presentations when introducing the refreshments at society meetings and events.

Her long interest in students was duly noted and the role she played as a historical interpreter to many diverse audiences was also highlighted.

Society Executive Director Stanley R. Howe, who served as Master of Ceremonies, announced that a fund had been established by vote of the society board of trustees to honor Post, who also left the society a bequest.

Memorial contributions, plus the bequest from Post, will be used to establish the Persis G. Post Junior Historical Society Fund, which will honor her lifelong commitment to the young and her love of history.

Howe said the next issue of the society’s quarterly, the Courier, would feature an article on Mrs. Post and her many contributions to the society.

Following that portion of events marking the annual opening of the Dr. Moses Mason House Museum for the season, a slide show featuring Androscoggin River views was presented by Randall H. Bennett, curator of collections at the society, to officially commemorate the opening of the 2007 exhibit, “A River’s Journey: The Story of the Androscoggin.”

Following the slide show, visitors, members and friends were encouraged to view the exhibit at the O’Neil Robinson House, which is open from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, July 1 to Labor Day.
