Since 1982, if a patient involuntarily committed to a mental hospital refused treatment, nothing could force them. This session, a bill sponsored by John Nutting passed that gives a medical panel authority to start administering medication – a significant change to the system, Nutting said.

Another bill he sponsored tightened the laws against owners of dangerous dogs, spurred by a Livermore Falls family who said a neighbor’s pit bulls attacked their farm animals.

An effort of his to cut unnecessary costs and eliminate duplication in state government by creating a committee to review all expenses technically failed, but was later folded into the budget, he said.

In addition, he was the Senate chairman of the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee, which reported out a significant bill creating a tiered system for milk costs depending on the size of a dairy farmer’s operation, in an effort to keep farms open.

The committee reviews agriculture, animal welfare and geological issues. Nutting is also a member of the Judiciary Committee.
