School consolidation

Issue: Sabattus schools are having trouble finding other districts with which to merge, school board member Joline Lacoste told selectmen Tuesday. She referred to Gov. John Baldacci’s proposed plan to drastically reduce the number of state school districts through consolidation.

Up next: The school board wants to form a reorganization planning committee and is seeking one selectman, one school board member and one citizen from each town in School Union 44 to serve in the group.

Computers needs

The scoop: Police Chief Thomas Fales told selectmen that he is researching prices for a network server to replace one in Town Hall that irreparably crashed several weeks ago. Road Foreman John Hyde, who last week requested a second computer for his office, received a machine from the selectmen’s office. Additionally, firefighter Don Therrien said there might be a spare printer at the Fire Department that Hyde could have.

Recycling panel

The scoop: Town Manager Gregory Gill proposed a nine-member solid waste and recycling committee be established to review the town’s trash tendencies and promote increased recycling. More recycling will mean less money spent hauling away refuse, Gill said, which would help offset a $15,000 reduction in the town’s solid waste budget passed by voters during May’s town meeting.

Speaking of recycling

The scoop: Beginning this week, the transfer station will accept more plastic for recycling. Beverage and food containers with the code “#1-7 HDEP” stamped on the bottom can be returned at the recycling center as long as they are rinsed clean and the caps removed.

Road repairs

The scoop: Selectmen signed an agreement with the state Department of Transportation, called the Urban-Rural Initiative Program, which will net the town more than $50,000 to use for road repair.

Comprehensive Plan

The scoop: Selectmen agreed to establish a 15-member committee to update the town’s Comprehensive Plan. Selectman Guy Desjardins suggested that its roster include one selectman, one Planning Board member, as well as the town’s codes enforcement officer.

Compressor bids

Issue: Road Foreman Hyde received three bids for a public works air compressor. The lowest bid, at $2,285, came from Trask-Decrow Machinery in South Portland.
