• About 600 men are employed in grading for the new electric road between Sabattus and Gardiner. Good progress has been made and barring accidents the road will be in operation by early October. The greater part of the iron is on the ground and, therefore, no delays will be necessary owing to lack of rails. Work on the Mechanic Falls line is also advancing satisfactorily, and this road will be open to traffic by Sept. 1, it is believed. The work on both these lines is being pushed as rapidly as possible.

• A party of Indians has pitched a tent on the hill between Pine and Walnut streets just above Shawmut Street and is making baskets and picture frames.

• President Eisenhower today approved a 100,000-man cut in the armed forces to be carried out within the next six months.

• Hundreds of posters in store windows all over the state will herald the arrival of this year’s observance of Maine Products Week, July 29-Aug. 3. The principal feature of the week’s observance is the giant show of Maine products in store windows in cities and towns from Kittery to Fort Kent.

ATOMIC TEST SITE, Nev. – The atomic weapon “Diablo” exploded in a cloud of purple fire today and hurled its shock waves with such power that windows broke and cracked 250 miles away.
