Golfing legend Gary Player says he knows of at least one golfer who has used steroids. He said the player made him swear to secrecy before admitting to him that he used performance enhancing drugs “and I could see this massive change in him.” I wish he’d specified whether it was a current player or one of his peers so I could cross Lee Trevino and Craig Stadler off my list of suspects.

Franco’s not dead yet

The Atlanta Braves have signed 48-year-old Julio Franco a week after he was released by the New York Mets. The Braves actually wanted to sign Franco earlier but it’s a two-day journey from Del Boca Vista when you’re only driving 35 MPH on the Interstate.

Jerry Yang, a 39-year-old psychologist, won the $8.25 million top prize at the World Series of Poker. Yang said he uses his professional training while playing cards, making him the first person to make money from a degree in psychology.

Kobe Bryant is one of 17 players expected to report for U.S. national team minicamp this weekend. USA Basketball officials are holding their breath hoping some other big names such as LeBron James or Amare Stoudemire show up, otherwise Kobe will be demanding a trade to Argentina or Germany.

The LPGA Tour has acquired the Duramed Futures Tour, the 27-year-old developmental circuit that has sent nearly 300 players to the big tour. The futures tour will be renamed the Michelle Wie’s Career Memorial Cup.

Ichiro Suzuki’s new contract extension calls for the Mariners to defer $25 million of the $90 million he is owed, money that the team will not have to fully pay until at least 2032. Ichiro will be 59 then. Guess he isn’t expecting to get anything from Social Security, either.
