Students ‘immersed’ in program

LEWISTON – Students from Saint-Come, Quebec, and the Lewiston-Auburn area experienced a two-week immersion exchange program recently.

For the second year in a row the Franco-American Heritage Center conducted an exchange program that enabled local 11- to 14-year-old students the opportunity to live with a Canadian family and learn about their language, their customs, traditions and about the way of life in a household of a different country.

This year 23 students had the opportunity to experience the two-week adventure due to the generosity of the Auburn-Lewiston Breakfast Rotary Club. The Club Calumet in Augusta also contributed to the project.

The students were paired up according to ages, their likes and boys with boys and girls with girls. The Canadian visitors took trips to the Maine State Museum, Blaine House, the Capitol, Old Orchard Beach, the Maine Mall, Big Adventure, Hoyt’s Cinema, Roy’s Golf Range and Sparetime Recreation. They also played games and saw educational films at the center.

While in Canada, the Lewiston-Auburn students visited the Seven Chutes, did some biking, attended a Canadian national holiday celebrations and parade, picked berries and took part in sports activities.

Students were asked to write a short essay on why they wanted to take part in the immersion program. All middle school students in the L/A area were invited to take part.
