BELFAST (AP) – A Searsport man accused of fatally stabbing his brother last November went on trial Tuesday in Waldo County Superior Court.

Mike Nickerson, 50, told police that he stabbed Charlie Nickerson, 44, because he was tired of being beaten by his brother.

Charlie Nickerson was taken by ambulance from the home the two men shared to a hospital in Belfast, where he died.

The fatal fight began with a family dispute that escalated to the point that Mike Nickerson said his brother ordered him to move out and then assaulted him.

Mike Nickerson, who’s charged with manslaughter and elevated aggravated assault, told police he’d set aside the knife in the event he was assaulted.

He said that after being attacked by his brother on Nov. 12, he grabbed the knife and thrust it “two or three times” into his brother’s side.

Nickerson was arrested three days after the stabbing. He has been held since then at the Waldo County Jail, where he was unable to raise bail.
