LEWISTON – Mekae Hyde capped a nine-run eruption in the third inning with a bases-loaded triple as Gayton pulled away for a 14-3 victory over Northern Oxford County in the Zone III quarterfinals.

Gayton was clinging to a 4-3 lead before breaking the game open in the third off Northern Oxford pitcher Matt Laubauskas.

Mike Fontaine had a pair of doubles for Gayton (10-11), while Hyde, Travis Dyke, Devan Knight and Willie Emerson also had a pair of hits. Luke Potter went the distance for Gayton, allowing five hits and striking out five.

Gray 1, Brunswick 0

WINDHAM – Lucas Chase fired a two-hit shutout and drove in the game’s only run with a double in the fourth inning to lead Gray to a 1-0 victory over Brunswick in the quarterfinals of the American Legion Zone III playoffs.

With one out, Chase dropped a double five feet in front of the fence on the left-field line to easily score Nick Derice, who was running on the pitch from first base. Matt Moberg also hit a double for Gray (17-4).

Only one Brunswick runner reached second base, but he was thrown out at third trying to advance on a ground ball in the fifth inning.

Chase finished with five strikeouts. Dave Longley limited Gray to three hits and fanned four for the loss.

Gilman Electric 2, Smith-Tobey 0

POLAND – Jackie MacVane’s two-run single broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth giving Gilman Electric a 2-0 win over Smith-Tobey in a Zone III quarterfinal.

Kyle Mullins reached first with a base hit in the deciding frame. Kyle Kyllonen followed with a bunt single and Will Griffiths drew a walk, loading the bases with two out. MacVane wasted no time tallying his third hit of the game and drilled Steve Hall’s first offering to left-center to seal the win.

Griffiths relieved Mullins in the sixth inning to earn the win for Gilman Electric (14-7).

Steve May paced Smith-Tobey (7-14) with a pair of hits.

Bessey Motors 10, Andy Valley 0

OXFORD HILLS – Matt Verrier erupted for four hits, including a pair of two-run home runs and six RBIs, as Bessey Motors dropped Andy Valley 10-0 in a Zone III quarterfinal matchup.

Verrier’s first home run was crushed to left-center to open the scoring in the first inning. His second was a clean inside-the-park home run that reached the 495-foot marker in deep center. He also registered RBI singles in the second and sixth innings.

Ben Goodall stroked a double and took the win on the hill for Bessey Motors (14-7) while Ryan Yates added a pair of singles.

Nick Letourneau and Dan Danforth each hit a double for Andy Valley (4-17).
