MARKHAM, Ontario – Vijay Singh dropped his driver in disgust at the top of his backswing, thinking he’d hit into the lake down the left side of the 11th fairway.

But instead of dropping in the water, the ball skipped safely along the bank and he walked off the par-5 hole with an easy two-putt birdie.

The big Fijian wasn’t as fortunate with some errant shots to the right, making two late bogeys en route to a 3-under 68 and a one-stroke lead Saturday in the Canadian Open. He had a 12-under 201 total on Angus Glen’s North Course.

“I’m kind of disappointed with the way I finished,” Singh said. “I thought I played better than a 68. I made a lot of mistakes that I normally wouldn’t, but that’s the way golf is. You know, you get good breaks out there as well. I got up and down a few times … and got away with a bad tee shot on 11.”

Inkster leads by 2 shots in Evian Masters

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France – Juli Inkster had a 3-under 69 Saturday for a two-shot lead and Michelle Wie ballooned to an 84 after the third round of the Evian Masters.

The 47-year-old Inkster is vying to become the oldest player to win an LPGA Tour event. She finished at 6-under 210 on a tough day for scoring because of swirling winds, tricky flag positions and difficult greens. Only seven players broke par.

“I played very well,” said Inkster, who had five birdies and two bogeys. “I’m driving the ball well, I hit good irons and good wedges and I’m putting good.”

Jang Jeong of South Korea is second after a 72, followed another shot back by Sophie Gustafson of Sweden (72), Shin Ji-yai of South Korea (70) and Diana D’Alessio of the United States (76).

Ginn shoots 69 to lead Watson by 1 shot

GULLANE, Scotland – Tom Watson showed flashes of his vintage links mastery with a 1-under 70 Saturday at Muirfield to put himself within one shot of leader Stewart Ginn after three rounds of the Senior British Open.

A five-time British Open winner at Carnoustie, Turnberry, Royal Troon and Royal Birkdale and the famous Muirfield links, Watson is a contender to win the title for the third time. He also won in 2003 and ’05.

“It still burns a lot,” Watson said of his hunger for winning titles, especially on links courses.

Romero shoots 63 to take Deutsche Bank lead

ALVESLOHE, Germany – Andres Romero shot a 9-under-par 63 Saturday to take the third-round lead at the Deutsche Bank Players’ Championship a week after his surprise third-place finish in the British Open at Carnoustie.

The 26-year-old Argentine, who squandered a late lead at the Open, is at 17-under 199 after three rounds and moved two strokes ahead of Zane Scotland after a windless day at the Gut Kaden course.

Lee Slattery is third, another stroke back.

Romero collected two eagles and five birdies and went bogey free as he pursued his first title on the European Tour. His aggressive play paid off and didn’t backfire as it did at Carnoustie, where a double bogey and bogey on the last two holes cost him the title.
