AUBURN – Healthy Androscoggin, in partnership with the Smoke-Free Housing Coalition of Maine, will conduct a free training session on Thursday, Aug. 9, to show landlords, developers and project managers how to adopt a smoke-free policy in their multi-use residential buildings.

The smoke-free housing landlord training is the first of its kind in the area.

The training will be used to educate multi-unit building owners or managers on implementing the legal, cost-effective policy in their apartment buildings and communities.

“Over 78 percent of tenants want to live in smoke-free housing,” said Marion Browning of Healthy Androscoggin, training coordinator. “The goal of this training is to show landlords how they can capture that market and provide practical information on how to easily adopt smoke-free policies.”

“By adopting a smoke-free policy,” Browning said, “landlords are not only saving money, but ensuring their tenants a healthier environment in the place they spend 69 percent of their time: their home.”

The training will be held at the Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St., from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 9. The agenda includes presentations by the Smoke-Free Housing Coalition of Maine and Rick Whiting of Auburn Housing Authority on issues related to secondhand smoke in multi-unit buildings and how to avoid tenant exposure by adopting a smoke-free policy.

Attendees will receive products and information, as well as access to the coalition’s resources and housing registry. A light meal will be served, and attendance is free. To register or search for a smoke-free apartment, check out www.smokefreeforme.org or call 874-8774. The Smoke-Free Housing Coalition of Maine is comprised of more than 50 public health advocates, tenants, landlords, property managers and environmental health professionals.
