Surplus funds

Issue: At the end of each fiscal year following a public hearing, all unspent funds left in school budgets are appropriated to balance other accounts within the same budget.

Scoop: It was voted to transfer $159,370 in school funds to area school accounts, and to transfer $115,687 in town funds to town accounts. A decision on carry-forwards in other accounts was tabled for further discussion.

Damaged building

Scoop: After a public hearing under the dangerous building code, it was voted to give the owner of a fire-damaged house on 49 Frost Hill Ave., Raymond Siegler, additional time to continue negotiations with his insurance company, rather than ordering the house demolished.

Job vacancies

Issue: The town has been advertising to fill four vacancies in the town office due to resignations.

Scoop: Councilors confirmed Town Manager Curtis Lunt’s appointment of Nancy Bosse as tax collector replacing Betty Gribel. Bosse formerly worked in the school administration office. Jennifer Stowell Norris has been hired as community development director replacing Dan Feeney.

New truck

Scoop: O’Connor GMC was awarded the contract for a 3-year lease/purchase of a new GMC truck for the animal control officer on its low bid of $15,523 with trade of a 1999 truck.

Snow rodeo

Scoop: Public works department employees David Judd and Duane Conant, who were only 12 points shy of winning first place, earned second-place awards in the annual state snow rodeo held in Skowhegan in June. In addition, Conant also won the award as the overall best driver in the state.

State funds

Scoop: The MDOT urban renewal funds certification assuring the town will receive $117,060 in state funding was signed.

Tax rate

Scoop: A review of revenues and a draft of the proposed 2007-08 tax rate indicates the possibility of a 2 percent drop. The council will meet for further review on Aug. 7.

Open house

Scoop: The public is invited to an open house at the public works department on Capital Avenue from 7 a.m. through noon, Saturday, Aug. 18.
