TURNER – The AK 12-and-under girls’ softball tournament was held at the Boofy Quimby ball fields on July 14, with the Turner Patriots winning the title to complete a 12-0 season.

Teams from Hartford, Leeds, Greene and Sabattus and two from Turner participated in the tournament. AK Director Cindy Veilleux and umpire-in-chief Dave Ingerson presided along with host Jennifer Simmons.

Beautiful weather greeted the competitors as Leeds topped the Turner Blue Jays in an early game. Leeds then lost a close decision to Greene.

Sabattus pulled away from Hartford for a victory, setting up a showdown with the Turner Patriots. Casey Pomerleau cranked a grand slam to put the Patriots on top.

In the afternoon, the Greene Gators (coached by Bill Clarke) and the Turner Patriots (coached by Curt Treadwell and Tim Pomerleau) met in the championship game. Michelle Morin of the Gators and Jenna Cote of the Patriots locked in a nifty pitchers’ duel.

Greene scored a run in the first inning before Turner tied it in the second and claimed the lead for good in the third. The Patriots proceeded to a 5-1 win, completing the league’s first 12-0 season in recent memory.

Fans enjoyed an action-packed day, with delicious food provided at the Turner Athletic Association snack shack manned by Tony and April Casella and a host of volunteers. Donations were made by Bear Pond Variety, B&A Variety, Food City and Schrep’s. AK thanks everyone for helping make the day a success and congratulates the players, coaches and parents for their support of girls’ youth sports.
