Alzheimer meeting

Teddy bear picnic

MEXICO – The Mexico Public Library will host a Teddy bear picnic from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 14. All kids ages 2 to 11 are invited to bring their favorite teddy bear, along with a picnic lunch.

The event will be held outside in back of the library and on the side lawn. Activities will include a Teddy Bear Parade, songs, games and prizes, followed by a picnic. In case of bad weather, the festivities will be held inside. For more information, call the library at 364-3281.

Class meeting

RUMFORD – The women of the Stephens High School Class of 1948 will meet at Teena’s at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16. Call Simone at 364-3801 if attending.

Antique appraisals

DIXFIELD – The Dixfield Historical Society will host its second annual Antiques Road Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, with auctioneer Tim Gould appraising family heirlooms.

Cost will be one item for $5 or three items for $10. Baked beans and biscuits will also be on sale. Entries for the fifth annual Festival of Flowers will be accepted from noon to 3 p.m.

On Sunday, Aug. 19, a food sale and museum tours will be held, featuring old band uniforms, music and other memorabilia from the G. Dana Holt Band. Peter Stowell will host an exhibit of old Dixfield photographs. All are welcome.

Bryant reunion

CANTON – The Bryant family reunion was held at the home of Norman and Millie Vashaw on Aug. 5 with 44 present. Games of horseshoes, badminton and golf were played. The children had an Easter egg hunt and balloon games.

Gifts were given to the oldest, Wilma Richards, 102; the youngest, Isaiah Child, 5 months; and the first to arrive, Kevin and Judy Simpson. A potluck dinner was held at noon.

The next reunion is planned for the first Sunday in August 2008 at the Vashaw home.

Guests at the Vashaw home over the weekend to attend the reunion were their son and wife, Allen and Myong Vashaw of Wichita, Kan.; cousin, Guy Ames, Lakeland, Fla.; and cousin, Phil Ames, La Mesa, Calif.

Vashaw reunion

CANTON – The Vashaw reunion was held recently at the Vashaw home. Descendants of Frank and Ethelyn Vashaw attended from Maine and New Hampshire. There were 22 present.

Gifts were given to the oldest, Dot Powers; the youngest, Lauren Hodgkins; coming the furthest, Tom and Karen Powers; first to arrive, Harry Powers; out-of-staters, Don and Kelly Sawyer, Don, Sue and Matthew Vashaw. A potluck dinner was held at noon.

The next reunion will be held the last Saturday in July 2008.

Elks tourney

FARMINGTON – Farmington Elks Lodge 2430 will sponsor the Elks National Foundation 11th annual Charity Golf Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 23, at Wilson Lake Golf Course in Wilton.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and the shotgun start will be at 8:30 a.m. The four-man best ball scramble entry fee is $200 a team. It includes the cart, banquet and awards. The banquet and presentations will be held at the Farmington Elks Lodge.

All proceeds will benefit youth scholarships, veterans services and drug awareness programs. For more information, call Phil O’Brion at 778-1373.

Scholarship ride

FARMINGTON – Farmington Elks Lodge will sponsor the Tim Maillet Scholarship Ride, the fifth annual poker run, on Saturday, Sept. 15.

Prizes will be $500 for the best hand, $300 for the second best hand, $100 for the worst hand and $100 for the closest mileage guess. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the cost is $20.

There will be T-shirts, prizes, a meal and entertainment. This event is open to all vehicles. For more information, call Jon at 778-1959.

Open houses

FARMINGTON – The Farmington Children’s School will host a series of open houses next week: from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16; from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Aug. 17; and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 18.

The open houses will be held in the school’s new annex to the Old South Church on Main Street.

The school is a nonprofit, Montessori inspired school serving students in grades kindergarten through six.
