• Twenty-five Greeks in Lewiston have banded together and have decided not to pay any more poll taxes. It is claimed by some of the Greeks that trouble will be made for the first man who tries to make a collection. There are now about 180 Greeks in Lewiston; and of this number, 125 who have already sworn not to pay taxes remain firm that most of their fellow countrymen will follow their example.

NORWAY – A.M. Dunham shipped 60 pairs of snowshoes today for Lt. Peary’s next expedition to the North Pole. They are billed to go to South Harpswell, Me., a place Lt. Peary will touch on his way north.

50 years ago, 1957

• The Auburn Superintending School Committee adopted a resolution last night under which it declared its intention to name the proposed new 1,100-pupil high school the “Edward Little High School.”

• Junior “hot-rodders” will have to dump their pals off the handlebars and keep on the right side of the road if they don’t want police to take their bicycles away. A new general law going into effect Aug. 28 requires that bicycles keep to the right and carry no extra passengers on the handlebars or on back of the bike. Catching rides by hanging onto the back of cars or trucks is also forbidden.

If you ride your bicycle to Lewiston’s Lisbon Street, don’t expect to put it in a bike rack if you stop to shop. Some members of the Environmental Improvements Subcommittee, which oversees the downtown revitalization program, had asked about installing bike racks on Lisbon Street. Bu Development Director Gore Flynn told a couple of subcommittee members Thursday that he and his staff “haven’t found any that we liked.” Besides a lake of racks that complement the other street improvements, there doesn’t appear to be much demand for bike racks, Flynn said.
