MEXICO – One of two area people seriously injured in an early-morning crash Friday on Route 17 remains hospitalized.

Dana M. Burns, 21, of Dixfield was listed in fair condition late Tuesday afternoon by a nursing supervisor at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was a passenger in a pickup truck driven by Robert Heath, 24, of Mexico, patrolman Dustin Broughton said while reading from a report by investigating Officer Chuck Beale on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Chief Jim Theriault, Heath was driving north on Route 17, also called Roxbury Road, at 12:17 a.m. when he attempted to turn right onto Ledgeview Street opposite Tommyguns, a Mexico tavern.

The truck struck a cement or concrete wall head-on, rendering Burns unconscious, Theriault said.

“I believe it was alcohol- and speed-related,” Theriault said of the wreck, which totaled the truck.

Heath “was walking around and talking to Beale” before being taken by Med-Care Ambulance to Rumford Hospital, Theriault said.

Heath, however, was then taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, while Burns was airlifted to the Portland hospital. Both were critically injured, Theriault added.

A CMMC nursing supervisor said Heath was not listed as a patient by Tuesday afternoon.
