WOODSTOCK – Oxford County Democrats will have their hands full this weekend with two scheduled events.

Northern County Democrats in New Hampshire have invited the organization to welcome John Edwards, Democratic candidate for president, in Berlin, N.H., on Saturday. Edwards will speak at 10:30 a.m. at Glen Avenue Park, at the intersection of Route 16 and Brown Street.

Edwards is spending four days in New Hampshire and will visit Berlin as his first stop on the third day, according to the Edwards campaign Web site.

Cathy Newell, chairwoman of the Oxford County Democrats, said Edwards’ visit will likely be brief. She said none of the Democratic candidates have visited Maine yet, though she is trying to change that.

“I keep pushing the Fryeburg Fair on them, but I haven’t gotten any real encouragement,” she said.

Sunday marks the second year the organization has held a summer barbecue and family fun day.

The meal time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Maine Conservation School, though participants are invited to come earlier.

Attendees will include Gov. John Baldacci, Congressmen Mike Michaud and Tom Allen, Sheriff Wayne Gallant, state Sen. Bruce Bryant, and state Reps. John Patrick, Tim Carter and Terry Hayes.

Newell said the school will allow use of its beach, watercraft and other amenities. She said the officials would speak around 3 p.m., but they won’t make lengthy speeches.

The event will take place, rain or shine, at the school’s dining hall.

Tickets to the barbecue are $20 for adults, $10 for children under 10, and free for children under 5. Tickets are available at the event, but Newell requested that those planning to attend phone ahead to let organizers know. Proceeds benefit the county’s Democrats.
