STANDISH – Junior Sinisa Bajic scored twice as the University of Southern Maine topped St. Joseph’s College 3-0 in men’s soccer action Saturday.

Senior Eddie Weddington gave the Huskies (1-0) an early lead by heading the ball into the net in the 30th minute off a cross by Bajic. Bajic netted two second-half goals off assists by Weddington and sophomore Peter McHugh.

Thomas 2, Presque Isle 0

WATERVILLE – Thomas College won its first game in three seasons on a pair of goals and superb defense in a 2-0 victory over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in men’s soccer action Saturday.

Junior Tim Costa led off the scoring for the Terriers (1-0) with a goal at 12:43 in the first half on an assist from Robin Rojek. Freshman Cory Underwood scored an insurance goal on an assist from Jim Grant.

Women’s soccer
Gordon 2, USM 0

GORHAM – Gordon College scored once in each half, and sophomore Abby Ytzen made four saves as the Fighting Scots opened the season with a 2-0 victory over Southern Maine.

Senior Amy Colwill gave the Scots (1-0) a 1-0 advantage in the 18th minute when she collected a rebound and placed a 15-yard shot into the empty net.

Field hockey
St. Joe’s 4, Anna Maria 0

PAXTON, Mass. – Darcy Ward scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as St. Joseph’s College blanked Anna Maria College in field hockey action Saturday.

Jessica Baker and Renee Leach contributed a goal apiece for the Monks (1-0).

Goalie Alyssa Boykin made 12 saves for Anna Maria.
