WOODSTOCK – Selectmen decided Tuesday not to join with West Paris, Paris and Greenwood in sharing an emergency management director at this time.
The decision was made after fire chief and EMA Director Geffrey Inman said he was pleased with the situation as it is, but it might be something to consider in the future.
Town Manager Vern Maxfield said, “It’s best to stay as we are for now, but down the road it may become something that would eventually be in the best interest of the town.”
In other business, selectmen voted to contract with E.C. Hadley Co. of South Woodstock for this year’s winter sand and salt supply. Hadley bid $6.85 per yard and agreed to deliver in plenty of time for the first snow.
Maxfield said about 2,000 yards is needed.
“Because of the light use of last winter’s supply, there isn’t much room in the sand salt shed anyway, and if we should need more toward the end of the winter, we can always find someone who will be able to help us out,” he said.
The board also decided to call for bids for winter maintenance on the Concord Pond Road. The deadline is 5 p.m. Oct. 2.
Last winter, the job was done by Gerald McKenna Logging of Milton Township, and Maxfield said the job was well done, but it’s best to get bids and check prices.
Last year was the first time in many years the road had been plowed, and people were pleased they could travel from Milton to Peru without having to go by way of Rumford. Also camp owners on Big Concord Pond were pleased they could get to their camps to shovel roofs and check their property.
“Opening the road has been a great help to a lot of people,” Maxfield said, “and it also allows access to the pond for better fire protection for the camp owners.”
