PARIS – The Maine Kanteles will perform in concert Saturday, Sept. 15, as the West Paris Mission Congregational Church, UCC, continues celebrating the centennial of its founding.

This group of about 10 women plays the kantele, a traditional Finnish lap harp with a 2,000-year history rooted in the folklore of the “Kalevala,” the national epic of Finland. The kantele exists today as an authentic instrument played in Finland’s schools, universities and concert halls. Not only is it a beautiful sounding instrument, but the Finns consider it one of the most important symbols of their culture

Recently, the Maine Kanteles played at Deering United Methodist Church in Paris at a benefit concert to help the church restore its tower. This concert at the Mission Congregational Church, scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., will help put siding on the church. No fee will be charged, but donations are welcome. During intermission, refreshments will be served in the dining room.
